Note

This article refers to LSOAs and MSOAs. For Scotland, the equivalent of an LSOA is a Data Zone and the equivalent of an MSOA is an Intermediate Zone.

Choosing an indicator

  1. Click on the Data button to open up the data menu.

  2. Either expand the themes by clicking on them to see available indicators, or use the search bar to search for an indicator.

  3. Click on the indicator you'd like to view data for.

  4. The map will be shaded with the choropleth map for that indicator.

Understanding the choropleth map

Once you have chosen an indicator to view, you will see shading appear on the map - this is called the choropleth map. All areas across the country are grouped into quintiles (or 20% bandings) with each shaded colour corresponding to a quintile. This means you can see how different places compare with each other on that indicator. Depending on your level of zoom, you will see different sized geographies shaded: Local Authorities, Wards, MSOAs, or LSOAs. Zoom in to see the data at smaller geographies, and zoom out to see it at larger geographies.

You can hover over, or click on, any standard area to see the indicator's value for that area:

Clicking on the name of the indicator at the top right of the page will expand the info box. You will then see the value bands that the colours on the map correlate to and the geographic level you are viewing the data.

Viewing the metadata

The metadata provides additional information about that indicator. It will tell you how the data was calculated, when it was published, when it's expected to be updated, and the source. To view the metadata, expand the info box from the indicator's name at the top right of the screen, and click Details.

Viewing the data for custom areas

Info

The custom areas available have been personalised by the owner of the Local Insight account.

You can view data for an indicator aggregated to all of these custom areas from the map view

  1. Expand the info box by clicking the name of the indicator at the top right of the screen.

  2. Click Your areas to bring up a popup showing data for all of your custom areas as well as the National comparator at the top.

  3. You can export this data as a CSV by clicking Download CSV.
